Crossing Paths: The Aldol Condensation of Propanone & Butanone!
In this video I am going to explain how acetone and butanone react to form 6 products in one step.
In this reaction, propanone and butanone undergo a cross aldol condensation, where a base removes an α-hydrogen from one ketone to form an enolate ion. This enolate then attacks the carbonyl carbon of the other ketone, creating a β-hydroxy ketone. With heat, the product loses water to form an α,β-unsaturated ketone. It’s a classic example of building bigger carbon frameworks using simple ketones!
