REAL-LIFE Minecraft Cave | Keown Falls Trail

Keown Falls is one of North Georgia's most rewarding hikes! Well maintained, clean, and beautiful. Tucked away in the beautiful Johns Mountain Wildlife Management Area, this trail offers a bit of everything: a challenging climb, serene forest scenery, and the unique payoff of a magnificent waterfall with a secret grotto you can walk behind… if you can really call it a waterfall. Someone needs to check the waterfall’s prostate.

Join my son and I as we show you the steep stone steps that lead to the falls, the incredible views from the Johns Mountain overlook, and the awe-inspiring experience of stepping into the massive cave-like area directly behind the cascade. We had to hurry back because it started to thunder and lighting.

Important Note: Keown Falls is in a Wildlife Management Area, so you'll need a valid hunting or fishing license, or a Georgia Lands Pass to enter. Be sure to check the Georgia Department of Natural Resources website before you go!

• Location: Johns Mountain Wildlife Management Area, near Dalton and LaFayette, GA
• Trail: Keown Falls Loop Trail (can be combined with the Johns Mountain Loop for a longer hike)
• Difficulty: Moderate (steep in some sections)
• Distance: 2.2-mile loop
• What to expect: A well-maintained trail, a steep ascent, and a unique cave behind the “falls”.
