Here Is The Fiji's History Of Indians
Indians first arrived in Fiji in small numbers as early as 1813, when a lascar (Indian seaman) survived a shipwreck and settled among locals, but large-scale migration began in 1879 under British colonial rule.Indentured Labor System British authorities imported over 60,000 South Asians, primarily from northern and southern India (including regions like Awadh, Bhojpur, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Madras), as indentured laborers to work on sugar cane plantations from 1879 to 1916. The first major group arrived on the ship Leonidas in May 1879 from Calcutta, replacing riskier Pacific Islander labor while preserving indigenous Fijian customs. About half returned to India after contracts ended, but many stayed, forming communities and intermarrying, which birthed a distinct Indo-Fijian identity.Post-Indenture Developments From the early 1900s, free Indian migrants from Gujarat, Punjab, and other areas arrived, boosting trade and settlement. Indo-Fijians faced challenges like strikes in 1920-1921, leading to deportations of leaders such as Manilal Doctor, yet they grew economically in sugar, business, and public works. By the mid- 20th century, they comprised a significant population portion, speaking Fiji Hindi—a blend of Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and local influences—and establishing cultural institutions.
