Timing chain replacement is one of the bigger jobs on a BMW N54 and BMW N55 engines. I tackle this job with the N55 engine out, but you can just as easily do the same work with the engine still in the car. I'm also replacing the oil pump and the oil pump chain just to be safe and of course installing all new bolts. I replaced the timing chain twice on this car as after installing it the first time, I realized that installing old timing chain guides and chain was a bad idea. I ordered new parts and installed those right after. The second time around, it went much faster. You will also need a timing chain tool kit to time the engine before and after removing any big bolts. I also show how to remove the main crankshaft bolt and central bolts. The process is very similar on many other BMW engines such as the BMW N51, BMW N52 and BMW N54.
