2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport R Review! Is it better than the regular VW Atlas R?

Standout: Rear seats of the Atlas move in a such a way that you don't need to remove a child seat in the second row to access the third row.

Verdict: Both the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport offer a lot of space and a good amount of technology. The Cross Sport is good looking SUV but shoots it self in the foot by limiting the head room. At this price point the engines don't feel like they belong on this platform and the technology is there but

We found the Cross Sport to be a great looking full size SUV. It offers similar performance to the regular Atlas and from the front seat onwards you won't really be noticing much of a difference. Depending on the trim the Cross Sport is about 100-150lbs lighter because it doesn't have the 3rd row seating and its about 3 inches shorter in both height and length (R-line SEL differs). The sloped roofline makes this SUV very good looking but it does sacrifice the headroom. If that is something that is important to you, then a visit in person is required. Our cameraman is about 6'2" and he was snug in the rear seat but had plenty of room in the front. There is also more leg room in the Cross sport when it comes to the rear seats. And not having a third row means that the trunk is massive.

When it comes to equipment , this SUV is loaded with features that seem very familiar to VW owners. It offers all the usual goodies like headed and cooled front seats, a great display in the centre console and the fully digital dashboard.

How does it drive? In a word surprising. On paper the V6 with NO turbos would seem gutless making only 276HP and 266TQ but its actually ok. Not fast or capable of towing weights over 5000lbs. Offers good handling and feel through corners, has great stability with a slightly firm ride. Fuel milage is not class leading but its not going to break the bank either. We'd recommend the V6 over the 4cly turbo engine. Being on a Jetta platform maybe a weird concept for a full size SUV and the upside is the weight savings. Under 5000lbs makes this SUV light and nimble.
