In this video, I take you on an exclusive aerial journey over the Washwood Heath HS2 site in Birmingham, where the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) named Mary Ann has officially broken through. This incredible footage captures the moment Mary Ann emerges from the tunnel, completing her 3.5-mile excavation of the Bromford Tunnel.
HS2’s Mary Ann has been tirelessly boring through earth, creating this vital connection as part of the Bromford Tunnel. The breakthrough at Washwood Heath marks a major milestone in the HS2 project, connecting Water Orton to Birmingham.
But this is just the beginning. The second tunnel boring machine, named Elizabeth, is already on its way, expected to complete the parallel tunnel by autumn 2025. The Washwood Heath site will also become a central hub for HS2 operations, including a depot and control center.
