What exactly is a melody? We may use the term a lot with students but how would you describe the manipulation of the elements of music that come together to create a melody? This video goes a little way to explaining it.

As a follow up you could discuss how boring Music would be if pitch or rhythm weren't used or perhaps try and sing a favourite class song, or the National Anthem in "robot" voice and then try to discover what is happening rhythmically and pitch-wise to make your favourite song or anthem work the way it does.
