Discover how this versatile tool combines fluid-flow, solid mechanics, and heat-transfer modelling for Earth science applications.
We present an overview of the multi-physics package Elmer (http://www.elmerfem.org). The source-code is open-source, published under GPL v2, with the library – which can be called via an API – under LGPL.
Elmer can combine different physical problems, such as fluid-flow, solid mechanics, heat-transfer and electro-dynamics also in a combined fashion, such as fluid-structure interaction, electrical heating, and electrical machine optimization.
The code base of Elmer is written in modern Fortran with smaller parts in C and C++. Elmer is able to utilize several external (mainly HPC optimized) libraries, such as MUMPS, cPardiso, MKL, Hypre, and includes the parallel paradigms for shared as well as distributed memory.
The versatility and functionality of Elmer will be shown along real-world examples from industrial applications, such as electrical machine layout and nuclear-waste repository assessment, but also in academic applications, like Earth Science.
