The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Humane Slaughter Guidelines describe killing pigs with CO2 gas chambers. During the draft process, veterinarians requested that they put language in the guidelines recommending cameras be placed in the gas chambers so at least inspectors could see inside and verify that the pigs were being killed in accordance with the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Even Temple Grandin wanted cameras in gas chambers. But the AVMA refused to put that language in the Guidelines.
No inspector is able to see how 113 million pigs slaughtered every year are killed in these gas chambers. They therefore cannot be killed in accordance with the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
Help us raise awareness about the most common pig slaughter method in the United States. The industry relies on keeping these methods concealed to protect consumer trust and confidence in their product.
This year, we helped Dr. Monica Bando publish an op-ed in the Sacramento Bee about these gas chambers, and we hope to get more pieces published across the nation.
Your support will help us get information about these practices in the mainstream media, using the authority of veterinarians to dismantle consumer confidence in this harmful and corrupt industry. Donate Today!
