We Weren’t Ready: Dog-Friendly Ningaloo Reef | Off-Grid Camping

In this episode of our Ningaloo Reef travel series, we leave North Lefroy and head toward Exmouth—ready to explore some of Western Australia’s most iconic coastal locations. But travelling with our dog Ivy brought unexpected challenges.

We couldn’t visit dog-restricted spots like Turquoise Bay or the Oyster Stacks, and with school holiday crowds in full swing, the remote coastal adventure we’d imagined quickly slipped away.

Still, the day delivered plenty of moments:

• A rugged 4WD climb along the edge of the RAAF bombing range
• Close encounters with Ningaloo’s incredible wildlife
• Sunset at Vlamingh Head Lighthouse—complete with a humpback whale just offshore

But the biggest reality check? Learning that a rare, protected megalodon tooth once embedded in the rocks had been stolen. Along with the unexpected bitumen road, heavy crowds, and missed opportunities, it left us feeling flat.
