Want to learn how to turn your Scandi blade into a ScandiVex or how to Convex a regular edge? You will be a pro after watching this video.
Bark River Knives are known for their scandi-vex grind. If you're unfamiliar with it, I'll explain. It is a sharpening style that builds on the traditional scandi grind, making it even stronger and more durable. Most manufacturers use a platen, which is a flat surface behind a belt on a belt grinder, or a large round wheel to create the scandi part of the grind, making it slightly hollow ground. ESEE is one example that does this, along with many others. This results in a very sharp knife, but with a fragile edge. By taking the time to carefully modify that inferior grind into a scandi-vex, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a scandi grind that excels at cutting and edge retention, and a convex grind that remains extremely sharp yet highly durable.
I, of course, really edited this down for time so you didn't have to see every sweep of the blade on my contraption. You do get the overall picture and idea of what is going on and, hopefully, and rather inexpensively, start converting your own scandi grinds into Scandi-Vex!
