The song “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin and the 1954 film of the same name have several interesting background stories:
Berlin wrote the song in 1938 or 1939, possibly as a way to cope with the death of his son. The song's lyrics evoke a nostalgic, secular Christmas, and some say it was a response to the turmoil of the time, including the start of World War II.
The original introductory verse to “White Christmas” was “The sun is shining, the grass is green. The orange and palm trees sway. There's never been such a day. In Beverly Hills, L.A. But it's December the 24th.
Some say the film's depictions of 1950s American culture are enduring because they unabashedly show contemporary racism and sexism.
