یہ وہ شہرہ آفاق نظم ہے جو اپریل 1911ءکے جلسہ انجمن حمایت اسلام میں پڑھی گئی۔ لندن سے واپسی پر اقبال نے ریواز ہوسٹل کے صحن میں یہ نظم پڑھی۔ اقبال نے یہ نظم خلاف معمول تحت اللفظ میں پڑھی۔ مگر انداز بڑا دلا ویز تھا۔ اس نظم کی جو کاپی اقبال اپنے قلم سے لکھ کر لائے تھے اس کے لیے متعدد اصحاب نے مختلف رقوم پیش کیں اور نواب ذوالفقار علی خان نے ایک سوروپے کی پیشکش کی اور رقم ادا کرکے اصل انجمنِ پنجاب کو دے دی۔ ”شکوہ“ اقبال کے دل کی آواز ہے اس کا موثر ہونا یقینی تھا۔ اس سے اہل دل مسلمان تڑپ اُٹھے اور انہوں نے سوچنا شروع کیا کہ مسلمانوں کے حوصلہ شکن زوال کے اسباب کیا ہیں۔ آخر اللہ کے وہ بندے جن کی ضرب شمشیر اور نعرہ تکبیر سے بڑے بڑے قہار و جبار سلاطین کے دل لرز جاتے تھے کیوں اس ذلت و رسوائی کا شکار ہوئے؟۔ یہ نظم دراصل مسلمانوں کے بے عملی، مذہب سے غفلت اور بیزاری پر طنز ہے۔ بانگ درا میں شامل کرتے وقت اقبال نے اس میں کئی مقامات پر تبدیلی کی۔ جبکہ بانگ درا میں اشاعت سے پہلے نظم مختلف رسالوں مثلاً مخزن، تمدن اور ادیب میں شائع ہوئی تھی۔ اس کے علاوہ کئی زبانوں میں اس کے تراجم بھی ہو چکے ہیں۔
Baang-e-Dara: 105, “Shikwa” was one of Allama Iqbal's most thrilling poems, which he recited personally in the month of April 1911 at the annual session of Anjuman Himayat-i Islam held in the compound of Islamia College, Lahore. It was largely applauded and subsequently published in the magazines and journals of the country. This poem consists of 31 stanzas having six verses each. In the poem Iqbal has highlighted Islam’s living traditions in such a way that it strikes the very heart of a person. The carefully selected and well-knit words of the poem were immensely effective. They filled the hearts of a deprived nation with new life, courage and enthusiasm. Shikwa is a unique example of a complaint to God.
