Opinion: Why were Dr Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang so adamant about fulfilling their father’s wish, despite the personal sacrifices they faced?
Even at her passing on 9 October 2024, Dr Lee reiterated her father’s and mother’s wishes, urging that their home be demolished in accordance with their deeply held desires.
For the siblings, honouring their father, Lee Kuan Yew’s (LKY), deeply held desire to have the family home at 38 Oxley Road demolished was likely more than a matter of inheritance—it was a moral obligation.
This was one of two important wishes LKY expressed before his passing—the other being a quick, dignified death, which tragically was not honoured.
Despite signing an Advance Medical Directive (AMD) in 2013 to avoid life support, LKY was kept alive for weeks before passing away in March 2015.
The failure to fulfil his wish for a swift death may have strengthened Dr Lee’s and LHY’s resolve to ensure that his second wish—the demolition of the house—was respected, despite the harassment and persecution they faced from the Singapore government.
While the dispute over 38 Oxley Road remains unresolved, Dr Lee’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling her father’s last wish remains a defining aspect of her legacy.
