Martin Gambill was a Wilkes County (later Ashe County), N.C. militia member who rode 100 miles in 24 hours to alert the Virginia and Tennessee militias that British Major Patrick Ferguson was on the march with his Crown/Loyalist militia.
Thanks to Gambill's ride, the Over Mountain Men began their march over the Blue Ridge Mountains. They linked up with the militias from North and South Carolina to defeat Ferguson's Crown forces at The Battle of Kings Mountain on Nov. 7, 1780.
Martin Gambill played a major role in the Patriots keeping control of the Southern colonies.
