A beautiful Adagio, apparently an isolated movement, whose theme prefigures that of the famous Ave Verum Corpus KV 618 (1791).

The manuscript was originally written in 4 parts, with no mention of instrumentation. Judging by the tonal differences between the melody and the three accompanying voices, the work could have been intended for a Bb clarinet and 3 basset-horns in F, or an English horn and string trio.

Only the first section of this manuscript is complete, while the second contains only the melody, the other accompaniment staves being left blank. While some of Mozart's compositions are incomplete due to missing leaves, the state of the manuscript suggests that the work remained unfinished.

Given the melodic beauty of this fragment, however, it was tempting to complete it, which is what I did, relying in part on the recapitulation of the theme, and taking care for all the rest to respect the 3-voice writing of the accompaniment and its characteristic intervention on the 2nd beat of each bar, the first beat being left, more often than not, empty.

Thus completed, the work can take flight from the dusty, mute obscurity of library drawers to the light and sound vibrations of the concert hall.
