Wolf Den Run State Park - Potomac River #2301 Review | March Jeep Camping Adventure
We spent the last weekend of March exploring Wolf Den Run State Park in Maryland and wanted to share a real, honest review for fellow off-road and overland enthusiasts. We tackled the Potomac River & 2301 Badge of Honor, (skipped Huckleberry this time), and here’s what we discovered:
🌲 TRAILS & TERRAIN
The Potomac River section was the highlight – it features Black Level Run, the largest black trail in the park, and the newly added Trail 2301, a Jeep Badge of Honor trail.
The trails were very wet and slippery from recent rain, which made for a more challenging and technical ride.
One huge perk? We only saw three other vehicles all weekend. It was quiet, peaceful, and felt like we had the place to ourselves.
🏕️ CAMPING EXPERIENCE
We camped overnight using our Jeep with a rooftop tent, which gave us a new feel for weight and clearance on the trails.
The campsites were completely open fields, with no tree coverage or forested feel, which was a letdown. It didn’t feel like camping in nature—it felt like parking in a mowed pasture. Each site did have a fire pit, only lot 1 is level all others are unlevel.
⚠️ WHAT WE DIDN’T LOVE
The park is very spread out between the three trail sections. If you're airing down, it’s a pain to go back and forth on paved roads without needing to air back up repeatedly.
There are disturbing amounts of dumping zones: old washers, dryers, car parts, tires, rusted metal drums—you name it. It's not just one spot; it's scattered throughout, and it’s been there a while. It honestly felt sad and neglected.
For a state park, it completely lacks the feel of a state-maintained area. It begs the question—where does the entrance fee go? Because it's clearly not going toward cleanup or upkeep.

Trail signage is unreliable. Many trails are marked with number stakes, but not all are shown on the maps, which led us down a staked trail that wasn’t even an actual trail. We got stuck, had nowhere to turn around, and were on a slippery slope, literally and figuratively.
There are no directional signs, and some trails are so tight and narrow, it’s hard to imagine safely passing another vehicle. It would really benefit from directional flow markers and warnings.
🎯 Final Thoughts
Wolf Den Run has huge potential and some truly fun, challenging trails. But as a state park, we expected more. Cleaner grounds, clear trail maps, safer signage, and proper maintenance would go a long way. Right now, it feels like a forgotten space—and that’s heartbreaking for a place that could be so great.
