The cause of radiculopathy is inflammation or compression of an intervertebral nerve root. Radiculopathy develops for various reasons. Disc herniation is the most common cause of radiculopathy. Usually, this occurs with aging, when the intervertebral disc becomes dry and its edges are more likely to crack.
Osteophytes in the spine can also cause compression and inflammation of the intervertebral nerve roots in various portions of the spine. With age, ligaments that bind the spine together become thickened and stiff. This condition can cause ligaments to bulge into the spinal canal and compress the intervertebral nerves.
Radiculopathy can develop due to tumors that grow in the spaces between the spinal cord and vertebrae. Spinal trauma, such as vertebral fractures, can cause dislocations of bone fragments and compression of nerve roots.
