In the previous lecture, classical plate theory which is for thin plates, has been extended to thicker plates using First Order Shear Deformation Theory. This is necessary to be able to tackle sandwich composite structures. Approximations to the deformation of sandwich structures are found using concepts based on energy methods. Failure modes and closed form solutions for sandwich structures are discussed along with useful references.
