The structure of the benzene molecule is best understood through molecular orbital theory. In this framework, all carbon atoms in benzene are sp²-hybridized. The remaining six sp² orbitals from the carbon atoms overlap with the 1s orbitals of six hydrogen atoms to form six sigma bonds.
In the orbital model, benzene features a cyclic arrangement of six carbon atoms, with each carbon forming three single bonds and contributing to a shared double bond. The six carbon-carbon bonds in the benzene ring are equivalent, and the p orbitals of the carbon atoms contain electrons that are delocalized throughout the ring. This delocalization of π-electrons imparts unique stabilization and aromaticity to benzene, influencing many of its chemical properties.
