NYCU Linguistics New Discovery: Don't Let Eyeballs Mislead You When Learning a Second Language (2025 Aug. EP31)
When learning English as a second language, can your eyes be your biggest obstacle? A new linguistic study led by Professor Yu-An Lu from NYCU’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literature reveals that Mandarin speakers may unconsciously mispronounce English sounds due to interference from spelling and visual memory. Published by NYCU ELITE, this research shows that when learners rely on spelling rather than listening, it leads to systematic differences—like the iconic “Taiwanese accent.”
Through phonetic experiments and sociolinguistic insights, Prof. Lu redefines how we understand accents, advocating for diversity over “standardness” and encouraging learners to embrace the natural influence of their native language.
