Peratallada - The Joyau Cache of the Catalogne | Medieval Village of Spain

Peratallada is a Spanish town in the province of Gerona in the autonomous community of Catalonia belonging to the municipality of Forallac, Bajo Ampurdán. It was declared a Historical-Artistic Site for being one of the most important and best preserved centers of medieval architecture in Spain.1​

According to various references, the first origins of Peratallada were possibly Chalcolithic, later with better knowledge of archaeological remains, we can mention that the Roman culture settled in what is today the town and its geographical surroundings. Studies carried out cite the discovery in 1976 of a Greek enochoe on the property called "Mas del Bou Negre".2​ By its owners during agricultural work, which in subsequent surveys provided fragments of common Roman ceramics and terra sigillata, among others. materials.

During the restorations carried out in the castle in 1969, after its acquisition by the counts of Torroella de Montgrí, various ceramic fragments, typically medieval glass mixed with remains of Roman and even pre-Roman origin, appeared. Later in 1975 there are references to new finds of ceramic materials from the Roman period on a local road in Mas. Fragments of varied typology appeared on one of the slopes and on the surface, which researchers attribute to a period that begins between the beginning of the 1st century and lasts until the end of the 3rd century, AD. C.3​ The materials were deposited in the then Puig Castellar Museum of Santa Coloma de Gramanet.

The first written data that we have about the place refer to the Peratallada Castle from the 10th century, at that time, belonging to the Peratallada lineage and the first building that has reference to the place, around which the population grew.

The municipality of Peratallada disappeared in 1976, when it merged with those of Fonteta and Vulpellac to form the new municipal area of Forallac.4​
