Today (04-24-25) I was contacted by a gentleman from Kemira Water, who leases 50004 from Chicago Freight Car. Apparently they have been on the hunt for this particular car since early 2015, it truly has been lost. NS, CRDX, and Carb-Rite are in the process of being contacted for the reclamation process of this car. The last location information on this car scanned somewhere in Texas back in 2015, and it turns out the end of a 10 year man hunt for this car was 30 miles away from its leaser East Chicago.
CRDX 50004 is a Trinity 2743 gondola, built in August of 2006. Being a relatively modern car there's really nothing special or unique about it. What is interesting about the car, is the location it resides in. Stuffed in the woods on what was once the New York Central's "Egyptian Line" running from East Chicago, IN. to Cairo, Il, this car curiously rusts to the rails where it's been for seemingly half of its life to date. Additionally lost in the weeds, is a maintenance of way flat car, NW 527997, built in August of 1959. The 66 year old car seems to be in its final resting position just a few hundred feet away from the significantly newer CRDX car behind it.
The UP 4600 seen adjacent to the building is a different story. UP 79096 was spotted by NS at Carb-Rite. It was loaded in Baytown TX with Carbon Petroleum. I'm not sure how often Carb-Rite has cars spotted at their facility, but it's the farthest south active portion north of the Kankakee river.
