In November of 1985, then Sierra Leonean🇸🇱 President, Siaka Stevens who had been in power for over 17 years and who was well into the eighth decade of his life handed over power voluntarily to a man that was least expected by the nation, the then Sierra Leonean army commander Major General Joseph Saidu Momoh who had been the military Chief for over 14 years.
His rise to power is unusual in a continent where military personnel usually come to power through a military coup. For the first a military head of a nation's armed forces while still a serving officer, was adopted as a leader of the single political party and, by referendum, voted into power a civilian head of the state.
Without using physical force, the military head was constitutionally elected President of the State.
In this episode, we cover the rise and fall of Sierra Leonean🇸🇱 second President, Major General Joseph Saidu Momoh.
