Welcome to the fourth lesson of the series "Small School of Programming on the Commodore 64 in BASIC."
Today we continue exploring the capabilities of the Commodore 64 computer – from creating sound by manipulating the memory map, through the mathematical and logical functions of BASIC, all the way to working with multidimensional arrays, subroutines, GOSUB/RETURN logic, and finally — making a small text-based game in BASIC!
⭐ What do we cover in this lesson?
🔹 How to generate sound on the Commodore 64 from BASIC
🔹 Setting sound channels (three SID channels) through POKE commands
🔹 Mathematical functions: ABS, SGN
🔹 Logical operations: AND, OR, NOT
🔹 Advanced work with arrays through DIM
🔹 Using GOSUB and RETURN for subroutines
🔹 Creating a simple text-based game in a network of 81 rooms (9×9)
🔹 Working with random numbers, movement commands, and detecting the distance from the exit
🔹 Color and sound effects to enhance the impression in the game
If you love retro computers, programming, BASIC, the C64, or you want to learn how the first games were created — this is the right place for you!
🕹️ What is the game about?
You travel through a network of 81 rooms searching for the exit.
The indicators “Warm”, “Hot”, and “Boiling” show how close you are to the goal as you move using the W, A, S, D commands.
When you find the exit – the program rewards you with colors and a sound effect!
