In April 2024, Steam Incorporated ran an excursion train from Paekakariki to the Raurimu Spiral. DA 1410 hauled the train over the non-electrified section as far as Palmerston North, then one of KiwiRail's refurbished 'EF' class electric locomotives took over the train. We followed the excursion from Feilding to Mangaweka, then had a break before returning to Feilding to see EF 30192 and DA 1410 on their way back from Raurimu.
This was very significant occasion, because it was the first time a refurbished EF hauled a passenger train. Besides me and my Dad, loads of other railfans were out to chase the excursion.
