OM is on track to rejoin the Champions League in September. Until the moment arrives, the official site will look back over OM's 10 greatest moments in the world's premier club competition. This week, 1991's terrible loss on penalties to Red Star Belgrade in the final.

The image is certainly etched on the memories of all the Marseillais. Basile Boli, or "Basilou", with tears streaming down his face. No-one could believe the sad reality: Olympique de Marseille went down to Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League final in Bari. Worse, the match was decided on penalties.
However, none of the signs pointed towards such a sad ending; the Marseillais had knocked out AC Milan in the quarter-finals (1-1, 1-0) before easily accounting for the Russians of Spartak Moscow in the semis (1-3, 2-1). At the San Nicola stadium, the atmosphere is incredible. All of France is behind OM. Thousands of fans have made the trip to support Papin, Pelé, Waddle and co.
Raymond Goethals chose not to field the vastly experienced Tigana. The Yugoslavs' tactics were simple: neutralise the OM strikers. Despite the then-unknown talents of Prosinecki, Mihajlovic and Savicevic, Petrovic's side spent 120 minutes shutting the game down rather than trying to create anything. However, faced with this refusal to play, the Marseillais managed to create several strong scoring chances. But neither Papin, who shot fizzed agonisingly across the face of goal, and who was closely marshalled by the Red Star defence, nor Waddle could make the break in regular time. As for Dragan Stojkovic, who considered a god in Yugoslavia and feared by the Red Star players, he didn't take the field until half way through extra time -- too late, everyone said after the game.
So the match headed for an agonising penalty shootout -- a practice to which the Yugoslavs were much more accustomed, as they were used to decide draws in the Yugoslav league at the time. Prosinecki shot first and converted. Then up stepped Amoros -- he started, stopped, then shot straight into the waiting arms of Stojanovic. Papin, Casoni and Mozer made the most of their shots, but Red Star was still a goal in front. Pancev wrapped it up with his penalty and handed victory and the title to his side.
The Olympien dream was smashed. Basilou, in tears, was the very image of the people of Marseille.
