A woman's dream of a safe dog haven - one of Greece's biggest shelters | DASH

There are a million things I could say about DASH, a place I adored since the first second I arrived, but Carina, one of the young volunteers says it better than I even could: "I am humbled. I am amazed. I am deeply sad. I am full of joy. Two weeks volunteering in Greece and my world is upside down. It was the most intense experience for me so far. I thought I knew what to expect. I thought I knew life.
Boy, was I naive.
There I am, arriving in a shelter and i am greeted by so many dogs, i don´t even know how to manouver forward and pet them all. And then i get to know some of them better and learn about their stories. To say life has not treated them so well is an understatement and really makes you doubt humanity. They have been shot, dragged along on a car, used in fights and other cruel things. I would expect them to be nervous, shy, aggressive even, with me, a new person. And who would blame them, really?
But the opposite was true. I was welcomed with wagging tales, exciting barks and the most beautiful happy dog-smiles.Well, mostly, anyway. Sure, there are the few who need a little bit time. and yes, i also got bitten: By a dog that was used as a football. It took me one week and a small bag of treats before we cuddled together. One week! Only!! After she was treated like nothing... These dogs are just amazing, as are the wonderful people who give up everything to give these dogs back at least something. Who fight to give them a second chance. And damn it, they derserve it. They deserve endless love and walks and kindness. I am humbled. After all those dogs have been through, all they want is some attention and all the people working in the shelter want is to make this dream come true.
I thought I am there to help but in the end, they really helped me. So be like the dogs ;): Live life with passion, with purpose,with love and with joy. And give others the chance to do the same. To say it with Ellen Degeneres words: Be kind to one another."
