10-Day Alaska Highway Road Trip // Over 600 Miles From Seward - Talkeetna - Denali - Fairbanks

In June 2023 we took our three girls on a 10-day Alaskan adventure! We flew from Milwaukee-Minneapolis-Anchorage then rented a car and drove south for 2-hours to the seaside town of Seward. We spent three nights in Seward and did a Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise with Major Marine Tours, hiked to the EXIT Glacier, and went to the Alaskan Sea Life Center.

On day four, we drove back through Anchorage and up to Denali. We stopped in Talkeetna for a few hours on the way up. This was our one long driving day because we didn’t want to stay in-between the two cities. All-in-all we spent about 6 hours in the car. This summer there was lots of construction on the main highway and that cause some backups.

We spent three nights in Denali area at a great little cabin, McKinley Creekside Cabins. It was the perfect space for the five of us. Sometimes hotels are hard to find because we don’t really fit in a standard hotel room anymore. In Denali we did a State Park hike (Ermine Trailhead), a National Park hike (Horseshoe Lake), and went zip lining. We love waking up to the mountain air and could have stayed here longer! There are so many different hikes so be sure to research and do it. We did buy bear spray, it’s always a good idea.

After Denali we drove two hours north to Fairbanks where we’d spend the last five nights of our trip. We visited good friends that moved to Fairbanks almost 20 years ago and visited with a cousin and his family. We love spending time in Fairbanks as a local. With summer in full swing we took advantage of being in the water at the beach and going for a canoe day-trip. We also went to Pioneer Park and did Reindeer Yoga.

We flew home from Fairbanks-Minneapolis-Milwaukee on July 4th. This was the perfect trip to introduce the girls to the Last Frontier. We know they will be back with their own families some day.
