I ran the 2025 Porto Marathon with a completely different strategy: heart-rate controlled pacing. Instead of chasing splits, I capped my effort at 85% until halfway, eased into the high 80s through mile 18, and only let it rip at the end. Simple plan. Chaotic execution.
In this video I break down:
• My 12-week training block after moving to Portugal
• How the heart-rate strategy held up when things got messy (spoiler: it got messy)
• Course review - what to expect from the Porto Marathon start, river sections, wind, inclines, and the endless arches at the finish
• Mid-race clips, pacing trouble, and the late-race sprint that nearly put me on the ground
• Whether HR-based marathon pacing is worth it
If you're running Porto in the future, curious about heart-rate racing, or you just enjoy watching someone suffer voluntarily for 26 miles, this one’s for you.
