The Andhra Pradesh government believes that traffic problems in Visakhapatnam will be solved more effectively through a metro rail project than through the flyover construction currently underway. Therefore, it is proposing a double-decker metro rail project. The government states that the design, similar to those in Nagpur and Chennai, will allow vehicles to travel below and the metro train above. The metro rail project will be implemented in the first phase over a length of 46 kilometers. This includes a 34.4 km corridor from Steel Plant Kurmannapalem to Kommadi, a second corridor of 5.05 km from Gurudwara to the Old Post Office, and a third corridor of 6.75 km from Tatichatlapalem to Chinna Waltair. Of this, 20 kilometers will be constructed as a double-decker system, where vehicles will travel below and the metro train above. It is reported that this double-decker section will be built in two parts: 15 kilometers from Tatichatlapalem to Kommadi and 5 kilometers from Kurmannapalem to Gajuwaka. The Gurudwara to Old Post Office and Tatichatlapalem to Chinna Waltair routes, referred to as side metro lines in the city, will have only a regular metro track; there will be no double-decker system on these routes. The project cost is Rs. 15,000 crore. According to the representatives of Visakhapatnam, the metro rail project, including the double-decker section, will cost Rs. 15,000 crore. Of this, 60%, or Rs. 9,000 crore, will be borrowed from financial institutions. The remaining 40% will be shared equally between the central and state governments, with each contributing Rs. 3,000 crore. The state government is requesting the central government to bear its share of Rs. 3,000 crore. Only if the central government agrees to this will the project begin. Two weeks ago, the central government gave the green light for the expansion of the metro rail project in Delhi, but reportedly put the Visakhapatnam metro project on hold. It is reliably learned that the central government has asked for a report on the financial viability of the project. They have requested details such as the expected traffic on the metro, the projected revenue, the maintenance costs, and the time it will take to reach the break-even point and become profitable. Metro officials are reportedly struggling to provide this information. It is said that the central government, keeping in mind that the metro rail project in Hyderabad, a city many times larger than Visakhapatnam, was not profitable and the operating company L&T handed it over to the state government, has asked the AP government for this report.
