How Censorship Killed Horror

Indian horror cinema once stood shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world. From Ramsay Brothers classics like Purana Mandir, Veerana, Bandh Darwaza, and Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche to modern masterpieces like Tumbbad, 1920, Bhoot, and Stree, India once knew how to terrify its audience. But somewhere along the way, censorship killed horror — forcing filmmakers to tone down their vision and strip away everything that made horror powerful.
In this deep-dive, we uncover how the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) and outdated censorship policies destroyed the spirit of Bollywood horror. From removing scenes of gore, blood, and possession to banning psychological or religious themes, censorship made horror films “safe” instead of scary. Movies that once gave us terrifying legends like Tatya Vinchu, Monjulika, Samri, Liza from 1920, Hastar from Tumbbad, and Pashupathi from Arundhati turned into watered-down thrillers.
Meanwhile, Hollywood horror evolved — giving us The Exorcist, The Shining, The Conjuring Universe, Insidious, Hereditary, Midsommar, Get Out, The Babadook, and It. Directors like James Wan, Ari Aster, Jordan Peele, and Mike Flanagan showed how fear could explore trauma, religion, and politics. But in India, horror became a joke — reduced to background music and jump scares.
This video explores the entire journey of Indian horror cinema — from its golden era with the Ramsay Brothers, to Vikram Bhatt’s 2000s horror wave, to modern creators like Rahi Anil Barve (Tumbbad) and Amar Kaushik (Stree) trying to revive the genre. We also discuss how OTT platforms like Netflix India, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and Zee5 are giving filmmakers freedom again — allowing bold experiments like Chhorii, Tooth Pari, and Adhura.
Is horror in India truly dead, or is a dark comeback on the horizon? From Bollywood to Tollywood, from supernatural thrillers to psychological horror, we trace how Indian censorship, cultural fear, and commercial pressure changed the way we see the genre forever.
