This video is to reveal the striking difference between the profile of the Subaru Outback (compact crossover SUV) vs classic station wagons (true station wagons) of the past - including Citroen-CX Break, Volvo 240/740 series and more. The Outback (Generation VI) is shown next to a few AWD wagons from today's that are imported from Europe (pre-order).
In American market, classic station wagons have been completely replaced by significantly more versatile crossover SUVs that technically are AWD WAGONS with added ground clearance.
As you see the Outback next to station wagons, you immediately notice Outback's relatively taller profile, shorter wheelbase, shorter overhang behind the rear wheels, extremely inclined D-pillar.
Some "blind and deaf" mistakenly classify the Outback as "wagon" to distinguish it from "crossover SUV". An example: "The Outback is a wagon, the Forester is a crossover SUV". Nothing can be more stupid than that!
You can hear that nonsense from some prolific Youtube chatters (dealerships beggars).
Although they differ in style, both Outback and Forester are: 1. Wagons 2. Compact Crossovers 3. SUVs. So are Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-50, KIA Sportage, Toyota Rav4. Same class, same price range, same market segment, same target clientele.
The Outback is often confused with mid-size crossovers.
To make it clear. In the Subaru lineup: Subaru Crosstrek is subcompact, Forester/Outback are compact, Subaru Accent is mid-size.
Thanks to its best-in-class ground clearance, AWD system and safety rating, the Outback is likely to be the single best compact crossover SUV in the market right now.
