In this eye-catching demo—sometimes called the “Laser Fountain Fiber-Optic Effect”—a laser beam is guided through a stream of water flowing from a small hole in a bottle. As the water pours out, the beam bends and follows the curved stream as if the water were a flexible glass cable. This beautiful effect happens thanks to total internal reflection, the same principle behind fiber-optic communication. When light tries to leave the water at too shallow an angle, it reflects back inside instead, bouncing along the twisting water stream. The result is a living, flowing optical fiber that lets you see physics in motion.
