Few voices have the power to move a nation. Divya Kumar is one of them.
Join us for Episode 136 of Unfolding Talents featuring the incredibly soulful Divya Kumar, the man whose voice has defined some of India’s most unforgettable musical moments.
From lending life to chartbusters like Sun Saathiya, Shubhaarambh, and Hawan Karenenge to singing the iconic 2011 Cricket World Cup anthem De Ghumake, Divya Kumar’s voice has become a part of India’s collective memory, filled with emotion, celebration, and pride in every note.
In this heartwarming episode, Divya opens up about the journey that shaped him, from singing Jee Karda to revealing the story behind Shubhaarambh, a song that continues to play at every “new beginning.” He also takes us behind the making of Hawan Karenenge from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and shares a beautiful memory of what Shankar Mahadevan told him during that recording.
One of his proudest milestones remains singing De Ghumake, the 2011 World Cup anthem, a song that echoed across the nation the night India lifted the trophy after 28 years. He also recalls creating the 2015 World Cup campaign Mauka Mauka, which stirred massive reactions online. Laughing about it, Divya says, “That campaign stopped midway, and so did our World Cup wins,” making him quite the lucky charm of Indian cricket.
Years later, destiny brought him back to the field once again, this time to sing the anthem for the Indian Women’s Cricket Team that went on to win the World Cup this year.
Divya also opens up about the lesser-known realities of playback singing, the uncertainty, the struggle, and the undying hope of finding that one song that changes everything. He reveals how singers often sign contracts for just ₹11, how some of his biggest hits earned him no money, and how one of his songs was replaced by Diljit Dosanjh in The Ba**ds of Bollywood*.
Through it all, Divya continues to view his journey with optimism and gratitude, drawing inspiration from the one person who keeps him going, Shah Rukh Khan.
A story of passion, perseverance, and pure love for music, this episode is a heartfelt tribute to every artist who dares to dream.
