New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell in a mid-1950s recording of the Schumann Arabeske Op.18. Farrell recorded for the Pye label, with sessions being held in EMI's legendary Abbey Road Studios. He was a widely respected pianist, with William Kapell having arranged tutelage with his teacher Olga Samaroff upon meeting the pianist; Samaroff claimed that Farrell was her greatest pupil. Sadly, Farrell - like Kapell - died at the age of 31, the victim of a traffic accident in 1958.
His pianism is marked by a rich sonority, extremely attentive phrasing, wonderfully detailed blending of harmonies, and attention to structure and form. There are two 2-CD sets of his recordings available on the Atoll label, with a third in preparation. Please see http://www.atollcd.com/catalog_detail... for ordering information.
