You might think that sewing is a bonnet maker’s biggest challenge, but it isn’t. It’s your attitude. So, what is the country bonnet maker's secret? Mischief keeps her young. Hattie Canter spends a lot of time at her sewing machine. Years ago, she wanted a new bonnet but couldn’t find a pattern, So Hattie took an old bonnet from the 1920s, cut it apart and it became her pattern. That was many, many hats ago. Some people call them Colonial, Pioneer or Prairie styles. Hattie Canter makes a classic Southern Bonnet. They are stylish, comfortable and made to be worn. The fabric is odds and ends and empty flour sacks. The lining is old bed sheets. When I watched her working, she smiled, grinned and laughed to herself. Hattie has one of those infectious smiles because, as she told me, “I have mischief in my soul.” Mischief keeps her young. When I asked what kind of mischief she elbowed me and said, “I don’t tell people because they would be embarrassed.” Hattie Canter's bonnet making secret is simple … just be happy and have fun. I guess it's the power of a positive mental attitude. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1975.
