Tony Miles, aka "Smiley Miley", became a legendary figure in British radio thanks to his work on the Radio 1 Roadshow during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Here he talks about how the roadshow first started, how the "Smiley Miley" name came about, and what he makes of the modern day successor to the roadshow, The Big Weekend. Hosted by James Hanson, filmed and produced by Andy Bennett.
Tony Miles was instrumental in establishing the first ever Radio 1 Roadshow in July 1973. From that moment on, the format became a huge success - attracting tens of thousands of people at locations across the UK. Alongside his work keeping the show on the road, "Smiley Miley" became a star in his own right, with on-air features like 'Bits and Pieces' and 'The Smiley Miley Mileage Game'. He's worked with all the big-names from the glory days of Radio 1 - from Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds and Alan Freeman, to Steve Wright, Simon Mayo and Gary Davies.
