Comet 3I/ATLAS will be closest to Earth on December 19, 2025, at a distance of approximately 269 million kilometers (\(1.798\) AU).
Key characteristics and behaviors:
Origin: It is an interstellar object, meaning it originated from another star system.
Activity: Its activity was unusual, with delayed outgassing and a high ratio of carbon dioxide to water vapor, which is more typical of comets far from the Sun.
Appearance: Observations revealed it glowed green, which is a phenomenon not yet fully explained and may hint at a unique composition or formation history.
Trajectory: It is on a hyperbolic orbit, so it will continue on its path out of the solar system and is not a threat to Earth.
