Eugene (Evgenii) is without a doubt a challenge to fence with. Every blow struck is a lesson on distance, and with Rui not being accustomed to fencing anyone of the same height, let alone anyone taller than him had a rough time to try and overcome Eugene’s reach.
Senese tells us that a fencer that relies on hand parries and plays short game (fencing in wide stances with short steps) will always be failing in the art and therefore imperfect, because it will be forcefully more static and react more out of instinct which is in itself an imperfection. This is just Rui’s interpretation and one he wanted to share seeing as he found himself making these two mistakes and proving how much Senese was correct.
Nevertheless it’s these sparring sessions that really force us to overcome our challenges and force us to find new ways of countering different obstacles and help us spot the flaws in our fencing.
