When the STI came to the United States in 2004, it came with a sweet looking key. It was made of titanium, stamped with the STI logo and had a blue plastic trim piece to it. One year later, Subaru began using an immobilizer system in their cars. While the new security feature is great, it also caused them to switch to a boring looking key that contained a 4d62 microchip.
If you had a 2005+ Subaru, you could not use the 2004 key as there was no chip. If you tried to use the 04 key, the car would start and then die immediately. Some people would bypass the security feature by taping a spare key behind their steering column. Some people would try to glue an immobilizer chip into a key fob with mixed results.
I didn't like either of these options so I designed a new plastic piece for the 2004 key. It's a little bigger and has a hollow spot on the inside for the immobilizer chip. This way I get the cool looking key and the security feature.
