Day 1 of our Camino
We've had a great break in Porto immersing ourselves in the food, culture and history. Porto is a steep, hilly city with quaint streets, beautiful buildings, plentiful cafes, 6 x bridges and the Duoro River system. We certainly have got our steps in here.
Laundry day today. I do love the smell of freshly laundered clothes.
As we have another 3.5 weeks of travel after our walk we took our main bags to a transport company in Porto to have them delivered to us in Santiago on the 19th. So from here in out it is just what we have in our backpacks.
They say ideally you should only carry up to 10% of your weight. I believe we may be carrying a tad more.
Today we start our Pilgrimage where we believe the Camino will provide everything/anything you need.
We left our albergue at 7am and followed the signs to the central route. You can either do the coastal or central route from Porto. We have chosen the central route which is a little more challenging than than coastal. Our destination today is Vilarinho which is approx 27 km from Porto. Jim has called an albergue in advance to book a room for the night as this place only has 2 albergues. Other villages along the way have more options. As this was our first night we wanted to make sure we had a place to rest our heads.
The walk out of Porto was challenging 😳 and the cobblestones all the way to Vilarinho were taxing on the feet and body.
Glad to say we arrived a little bit worn out.
Time to take off our shoes, rest for ten and then head into town for a well deserved beer
