8: Woodburning Tips and Their Uses - Transfer Point, Hot Knife Point, and Hot Stamps

Welcome to the final video in the series of woodburning tips and their uses. This video covers the last 3 common points that come in a basic solid point woodburning kit.

The transfer tips is typically used for transferring laser printed pyrography patterns onto the wood. But I wanted to see if it was any good for burning. Turns out, that’s a no. It does some basic large shading but it’s uneven and hard to control. You can use the side to create straight lines, but it doesn’t allow much control and the lines are fuzzy and faded. Not many uses for actual woodburning, and nothing great in my opinion.

The hot knife point is typically used for cutting plastics, foam, and other crafty things. But it doesn’t get hot enough to actually burn wood. You can use it to scrape off burns and add in textures afterwards. But the knife is kind of flimsy, so I’d use a box cutter, chisel or dremel to get those scraped looks and textures. Another one that’s not really great for woodburning.

Hot stamps ARE good for burning wood. But because of their design, you don’t have a whole lot of flexibility to do any real “art”. These are best for borders or for crafty decorations.
