If you thought spiders were scary then you've seen nothing compared to these monstrous sea creatures!
5 – Cthulhu Larva
The Cthulhu Larvae are most generally found on Demerara Abyssal Plain, but can be in abundance most anywhere except the North Atlantic Ocean. The Cthulhu larvae travel in groups of 300 to 600. It is only a few inches long, has no face and eats mud. The abyssal sea cucumber is one of the most successful ocean dwelling species, presumably because any predator would take one look at this thing and run home to sleep with the lights on in their parents’ room.
4 – Deep Sea Hatchetfish
The deep sea hatchetfish gets its name from the distinct hatchet-like shape of its body. It is a member of the Sternoptychidae family of deep sea fishes. They are most well known for their extremely thin bodies which really do resemble the blade of a hatchet. Hatchetfishes are one of the many deep sea creatures that have the ability to create their own light through a process known as bioluminescence. These fish have special light-producing organs known as photophores that run along the length of their body. This gives them a kind of “invisibility” effect to avoid predators.
3 – Frilled Shark
The frilled shark is one of two extant species of shark in the family Chlamydoselachidae, with a wide but patchy distribution in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It reaches a length of 2 metres and has a dark brown, eel-like body with the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins placed far back. The frilled shark captures prey by bending its body and lunging forward like a snake. The long, extremely flexible jaws enable it to swallow prey whole, while its many rows of small, needle-like teeth make it difficult for the prey to escape.
2 – Wolf Fish
The wolf fish, also known as the sea wolf, Atlantic catfish, ocean catfish, devil fish, wolf eel, woof or sea cat, is a marine fish, the largest of the wolf fish family Anarhichadidae. Apart from their unique appearance wolf fish are distinguished by the natural antifreeze they produce to keep their blood moving fluidly in their very cold habitat, involvement by both the male and female in brood bearing, and the large size of their eggs. They are also an important factor in controlling green crab and sea urchin populations, which can become overly disruptive to habitats if left unchecked.
1 – Goliath Tigerfish
The goliath tigerfish is native of the Congo River basin, the Lualaba River, Lake Upemba and Lake Tanganyika in Africa, and it is the largest member of the tigerfish clan, a genus of fierce predators with protruding, dagger-like teeth. Goliath tigerfish have excellent eyesight and have the ability to sense low-frequency vibrations emitted by prey. It generally circles the unlucky fish before striking with the brutality of a piranha. The Goliath tigerfish has been known to pounce on a 60-pound catfish and literally slice it in half!
