Kuwait International Airport is the primary international airport of Kuwait, located about 15.5 kilometers south of the country's capital, Kuwait City. The airport serves as a hub for Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways and handles both domestic and international flights to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and North America. The airport has two passenger terminals, with Terminal 1 serving mainly international airlines, while Terminal 2 serves low-cost carriers and regional airlines. Kuwait International Airport has been undergoing a major renovation and expansion plan to increase its capacity and improve its facilities, including the construction of a new Terminal 2.
A new terminal building is currently being added to Kuwait International Airport. Werner Sobek is responsible for the structural engineering of the main structure, facade engineering and the Building Information Modelling, BIM, for this project.
The new terminal has an edge length of almost 1.2 km, a clear height of up to 25 m and a roof area of 320,000 m². In addition to its size, the new building is characterised above all by the complexity of its roof structure: Despite its large scale, the roof had to be planned without expansion joints. This had extensive effects on the dimensioning and calculation of all components.
Kuwait International Airport Terminal 2 is a new passenger terminal currently under construction at Kuwait International Airport. The terminal is being built to expand the airport's capacity and accommodate the growing number of passengers traveling through Kuwait.
The new terminal will be able to handle up to 25 million passengers per year and will feature modern amenities such as restaurants, retail outlets, lounges, and a duty-free area. It will also include advanced passenger processing systems, 51 gates, and 96 check-in counters.
Construction of Terminal 2 began in 2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. The terminal is being built adjacent to the existing terminal, which will continue to operate during the construction period.
The construction of Terminal 2 is part of a larger airport development plan aimed at transforming Kuwait International Airport into a major aviation hub in the region. The project is also expected to create job opportunities and contribute to the economic growth of Kuwait.
