Saaqi Namah is an urdu poem written by the esteemed poet and philosopher, Muhammad Iqbal. Written in 1935 and published in his book Baal-e-Jibreel, Saqi Nama carries on the anacreontic tradition of celebrating love and wine. Iqbal, however, uses the word Saqi, or Cup Bearer, as a metaphor for the Almighty and wine as divine wisdom. The poem was written against the backdrop of colonialism's zenith. Observing the state of Muslims as they moved into the age of modernity, spurred on by capitalism, Iqbal wrote this poem to break them out of this stupor and invigorate their hearts. The themes of selfhood (Khudi), political agency, and spiritual revival form the backbone of this poem.
