Happy New Year! Here's the (for now) final installment of our Tournament Diaries series - a long overdue video detailing the games and overall experience at GenCon 2025 playing in the World Championship. We had a great time competing as Team SoCal and I got to meet many bright lights in the Scape community for the first time in person.
Much of the delay in making this came from my general fatigue with Heroscape that set in over the last few months, but just making this video I can feel the love coming back. I'd wanted to get this in before the end of 2025, but didn't quite happen with getting sick and losing my voice for a bit. Still, here it is, and I wanted to use this as the final episode to the Diaries series.
I talked about it in the video, but here are a few reasons I've decided to step away from this series:
1) Waning interest/view counts: I tend to think audiences vote with their views, and these videos weren't doing as well as other stuff on the channel. And so the time I devote to this channel I want to put into videos that most people want to see.
2) Keeping up with tournaments: I originally wanted to make a tournament recap for every event I attended in 2025, but that became too difficult as the volume increased. There are a couple of events I went to after GenCon that I simply stopped taking pictures/recording data for, and frankly, I prefer it that way.
3) Issues with the style: In theory, I liked the style of these videos. Over time, though, I came to see them as undisciplined and needlessly long coverages of tournaments. The size of these videos and how rambling I was in my discussion of these events made them feel like "junk food" content, and weren't sitting right with me over time.
It's not impossible I do another video in this style down the road for very special, or very significant, events I go to (say another major Renegade-sanctioned event like a regional or World Championship). But for the locals I've been attending, it's time to close the books. For those of you who've engaged with these videos and enjoyed them, I'm thrilled you've come along for the ride. Reading your comments and responses to the games we've covered has really been enlightening and, I think, has made me a better player. Hope you enjoy this final installment too.
Special thanks again to Team SoCal (Brandon, Kyle, Oscar, and Roxanne) for joining in the discussion.
