During the 1960s and early 1970s, the Christian Arts and Communication Service (CACS) in Madras emerged as a pioneering Christian media centre serving South India’s diverse language groups. With a full-fledged recording studio and trained choir, CACS produced the multilingual radio programmes Vanamritham (Tamil), Gaganamrutha (Kannada), Aakash Amrutham (Telugu), and Vanamritham (Malayalam). These were aired on Radio Ceylon and later on Indian stations, bringing a new sound of Christian devotion marked by orchestral accompaniments, choral arrangements, and clear Indian melodic phrasing.
The Kannada division, Gaganamrutha, translated and adapted many Tamil originals while also creating fresh compositions for Karnataka listeners. Its songs—such as Uyyāle Hāyuva Kristane, Raktadali Toledu, and Ninna Nāma Dhanya Dhanya—were composed and orchestrated by CACS musicians including Patrick Rosario (accordion) and colleagues. Lyrics came from Rev. Hannibal Cabral, Rev. Selvarathinam, Fr. Philip, and Krupakar.
When CACS closed in the late 1970s owing to labour and administrative challenges, Rev. Hannibal Cabral continued the legacy through the Swargaswara ministry in Mangalore, sustaining Kannada Christian music in the same creative spirit. The preserved Gaganamrutha song lists—credited to CACS for composition and background music—stand today as vital evidence of a unique pan-South-Indian musical collaboration that enriched Christian worship and broadcasting in regional languages.

Many of us grew up singing these timeless pieces—ನಿನ್ನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ನನ್ನ ಬಾಳಿಗೆ, ನಾ ಹಾಡುವೆ ಕೊಂಡಾಡುವೆ, ಆಜ್ಞೆ ಎನ್ನ ನಿಮಗೆ ನೀಡ್ವೆ, ಜಯತು ಜಯ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತಾ, and others. Prathap Athmadass, one of the directors of Stuthi, had lent his voice to several Gaganamrutha songs. He later taught about seventeen of these to the Stuthi group, many featured in their four DVD albums and elsewhere. ಕವಿತೆಯ ಹಾಡುವೆವು is one such treasured song, talking of joyfully singing remembering God’s unfailing love.
