I finally made it to the ghost town of Charleston, Arizona. It's not that easy to find, and I've given some tips on how best to get there. Here's a bit about the abandoned ruins, some of which are barely hanging onto the edge of a cliff.
Charleston is an abandoned mining town in southeastern Arizona. It was established in the 1870s and grew to a population of over 2,000 people during the silver boom. However, the town's fortunes declined when the silver mines played out in the late 1880s. By the early 1900s, Charleston was a ghost town.
Charleston was a notorious town during its heyday in the late 1800s. It was a boomtown and home to a number of saloons, gambling halls, and brothels. The town was also home to a number of outlaws, including Frank Stilwell, who was suspected of killing Morgan Earp, one of the Earp brothers who were involved in the gunfight at the OK Corral.
In 1887, Charleston was hit by a major earthquake, which destroyed many of the buildings in the town. The town's fortunes declined after the earthquake, and it eventually became a ghost town by the 1900s.
I read that Charleston was used by the military for training in the 1940s and that the Army took some of the town's ruins to build roads, bridges and other structures. However, Fort Huachuca's soldiers and engineers also fenced off the property to prevent vandalization and stabilized the ruins.
There are a couple of good links of photographs of Charleston (I wasn't able to get copyright release permission from poster as of the posting of this video)
