👉🏻 Toroidal Plasma Generator: an intricate dance of high intensity/high frequency electric and magnetic fields produce a ring of glowing plasma within a glass sphere containing noble gasses at low pressure.

👉🏻 Kraken Automata: “Here be Monsters” is the title of this mechanized sculpture by Wanda Sowry- part of the Curious Contraptions exhibit at exploratorium.

👉🏻 Aluminum Flip Top and Magnetic Stirrer: dynamic magnetic fields from rotating neodymium magnets in the base induce electric currents to flow in the conducting aluminum of the top. These electric currents then produce an opposite magnetic field of their own via Lenz’s Law. With the top now having a temporary magnetic field the magnets in the stirrer can spin it up. Tippie-tops are a famous physics toy that flip over when spun at sufficient rpm. So much fun physics in a single demo! Credit to astrophysicist Kenneth Brecher, the creator of this unique means of spinning up objects via Lenz’s Law.

👉🏻 Open-Closed Contraption: gearing, counterbalances, levers, and clever fonts combine to create this transforming signage. Fun engineering and original design by Ikeda Yosuke.

👉🏻 Vortex Marble: glass art intersects with the physics of optics in this lampwork art form invented by Kevin O’Grady circa 1994- and this marble bears his signature mark on the back. Different kinds of dichroic glass (doped with thin layers of metals and oxides) is mixed in to the borosilicate marble to create the intense colors

👉🏻 Silica Aerogel: a solid with extremely low density. Light as a feather, a bent post-it note can support the weight of this chunk. Used as insulation and for catching the tails of comets (see NASA Stardust mission).

👉🏻 Hollow Mask Dragon Illusion: An amazing feature of such an inverted image mask is that the dragon appears animated and seems to always be looking in the direction of the viewer.

👉🏻 Rainbow Obsidian: natural volcanic glass with multicolored iridescent layers. When cut and polished at just the right angle with respect to the layers, a pattern of concentric hearts is revealed!

👉🏻 Chaotic Double Ring Pendulum: a new design on the chaotic double pendulum. Interesting and intricate motion arises from a simple assembly of two physical pendulums (one attached to the end of the other) with the kinetic energy of the system moving back and forth between the two rings until friction damps away the energy.

👉🏻 Square Wave Horizon: A favorite kinetic art object in my collection- with a snap of the wrist waves are sent propagating, folding the structure into a tight curl- and a reverse snap will bring back the initial flat square state.

👉🏻 LogicSticks: strong neodymium dipole magnets embedded within tactile hexagons which allows for side to side connection (unstable equilibrium) and top to bottom connection (stable equilibrium). Here some unstable equilibrium constructions are triggered to self reconfigure into a stable stack- shown in 240 fps.
